Parore Te ĀwhĀ me ngĀ rangatira

Nā tēnei āhuatanga … ka karangahia e koe a …

[engari] kāore i homai he whakamārama me ahu pēhea…"

Thomas Bracken,

"Ki ōku whakaaro, he mea hūneinei tēnei.

A petition from Tawhiao, Wiremu Te Wheoro, Patara Te Tuhi, Topia Turoa and Hori Ropihana, translated by Frederick Spencer, July 1884, during the visit of the delegation to see Queen Victoria (they did not see her but did see Lord Derby).

He aha ngā hua i puta? Ko ngā wāhi hī ika, aha atu, he mea tango atu i a mātou.

Ki ngā whakaaro Māori … ko tēnei whakahaerenga ki ngā Māori o nāianei he take raupatu.

The petition was covered with an advice from the Governor that the New Zealand Government disagreed with the idea of such a council since it “would not be productive of benefit to the Maoris”. Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1892, A-l, p. 9.

Nā taua Tiriti rā i tau ai ngā kōrero a ngā iwi e rua nō ngā tāngata Māori anake te mana o ō rātou whenua.

Hone Heke,

E ai ki ngā Māori, e kore rawa ō rātou whenua e rawekehia ahakoa he aha… Engari he aha koa ngā ture e pā ana ki ngā take Maori? Ka kī ia ko te raupatu i ō rātou whenua, ā, ka kī anō ia he parekura nui ngā ture take Māori o mua ki te iwi Māori. E hia kē ngā take i whakaarahia ake e te iwi Māori mō te Tiriti o Waitangi, ka tono ake kia puritia ngā wāhanga o te Tiriti e ngā Kāwanatanga o Aotearoa, engari kāore i whakarongo. I whakamāramahia ki ngā Māori e ngā Pākehā maha o waho atu i te Whare, me ngā mema o te Kāwanatanga, he kore noa iho te Tiriti. He aha ngā hua?...

Timi Kara,
Mema PĀremata MĀorI mo te Tai RĀwhiti, me WaiapU hoki, e tautohe ana mŌ te Pire KŌti Whenua MĀori.

"I te raki o Ākarana, e tika ana, arā e kī rā te Pirimia, e ngākaunui ana rātou i te kaha o te kotahi o te whakaaro ā-iwi. Ka whakahōnore rātou i te Tiriti o Waitangi, engari kāore e taea e rātou te tautuhi ōna hua i roto i ngā mahi o ia rā. Ka kī ake rātou, 'Homai koa te "mana whakahaere whenua" he mea whakahirahira te Tiriti, he mea hanga te Tiriti i runga i ō mātou whenua; i whakamanahia e ō mātou kaumātua, ā, ko rātou i whiwhi i ngā hua o Ingarangi'; me ētahi atu mea. Me wānanga e tātou te hua ka puta: ngā painga ki ngā Māori me ngā Pākehā, me te take whakakoroni, whakanohonoho whenua.

Richard Seddon,
Pirimia, I te hui I Ruatoki me ngĀ rangatira o TŪhoe

"Ki ngā tāngata kua whiriwhiri me te Kāwanatanga i raro i ngā ture o mua iho, me ngā tāngata kua taka ki raro i te maru o tēnei ture a te Kāwanatanga, e kī ana ahau kāore koutou e whenua kore – e kore e mate i te moni, i te kai, me te kākahu. Ka nui atu ngā painga ki a Tūhoe mai i te wā i Tūhoe ai koutou. Kei te ora tonu ō koutou māngai hei whakapai ake i tō koutou iwi, ā, kua whakatakoto kōrero ahau me pēhea te whakaara ake i tō iwi. I kōrero koutou mō Tāwhiao me ētahi atu Māori – i whai rātou i ō rātou ake huarahi. Kua whai hua anō a ia?

Kei te mōhio tēnei Komiti he rūnanga, he komiti Māori rānei, e tū ana mō ngā tau e whitu.
